Solemnity of Pentecost

What could change fear into confidence? What power is strong enough to put fears to rest and bring confidence to life? Our fears come from many sources. Failure, loneliness and rejection can make us afraid to try anything. At times, though, confidence comes from the outside, often when we cannot find it in ourselves. For example, someone notices a talent we have overlooked, or a friend helps us to laugh at ourselves. It also happens that by sheer gift, we receive a new power, a new opportunity that makes all the difference in the world. On the part of the disciples, the gift of the Spirit, promised by Jesus, came in wind and fire, lifted them up and bolstered their confidence. Imagine, the same group that fled at the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus, the same people who cowered in an upper room after Christ’s Ascension—these people started proclaiming the message of salvation to large crowds in every language. No matter where your fear comes from, the Holy Spirit can change your life forever. Will you cooperate?

Reflection for the Liturgy of the Word
Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
First Reading: Proverbs 8:22-31
Second Reading: Romans 5:1-5
Gospel Reading: John 16:12-15
The Gospel reading today emphasizes the work of the “Spirit of truth” in the Christian community. Jesus is about to leave his disciples and is making provision for their future. Even though he has more to tell them, they cannot understand it before the event of his death and resurrection. Only in the light of their experience of the risen Christ will they be able to comprehend its significance. This insight, given by “the Spirit of truth ,” will guide them throughout the centuries in their efforts to grow in understanding. A striking feature of this passage is its stress on the common working of Jesus, his Father and the Spirit of truth. They possess in common; they act in common.
Life Focus

Name a time when suffering and injustice inspired you to seek the truth.

Relate a time when something that was kept from you motivated you to search and thus deepened your faith.

When has the experience of being helpless and weak led you to reflect within? How has this reflection helped you face adversity.

In other parts of the world, our friars work with church communities in the Philippines, Mexico, Thailand, Peru, Guatemala, El Salvador, Russia, Kazakhstan, and the Holy Land.
Over the years, the Franciscans have been assisted in their missionary efforts by people sharing their spiritual and financial resources through the Franciscan Missionary Union (FMU). The FMU is an association of persons who help the missions by their prayers, alms, spreading knowledge and love for the missions and encouraging missionary vocations - all works of the highest charity.
The Franciscans invite you to become partners with them in this ministry of love and compassion. Through your support of the Franciscan Missionary Union, you become partners in the work of the Franciscan Missionaries. Please join us!

GETTING IN THE PARISH BULLETIN
For Church Announcements, please contact Andrew in the Parish Office. Each week, submissions are due by Tuesday at Noon for consideration.

Moving the Stations of the Cross
The Stations of the Cross is a devotion begun by the friars in the fourteenth century when anyone who wanted to “make the stations” had to make the perilous journey to the Holy Land. On Sunday, May 16th about fifteen folks gathered to talk about the possibility of moving the Stations of the Cross from where they have stood for the last 40 years at St. Anthony’s to a new location on Mission property where they would be available to anyone at any time.
For a number of practical reasons, the informal initial estimate given to Fr. Nevin in May 2003 had to be revised upward to about $ 32,000.00 After listening to a history of the making of the mosaics by Fr. Nevin Ford, O.F.M., the artist, and the challenges explained by Fr. Richard, the group had a sense of excitement and energy in the project. Some folks who wanted to be at the meeting couldn’t come and one person came personally to express interest and to say that they couldn’t stay. The group felt it important to move the entire stations, base and mosaic together. Four parishioners volunteered to oversee the project through to its happy completion. There will be more information as the group begins planning.

MUSIC NOTES
If you are a singer or instrumentalist, your musical gifts are needed at our liturgies. Please contact Dr. Keith Paulson-
Thorp, Music Director, for details on how you might join in our music ministries.

Concert of Mission Music
TONIGHT at Old Mission Santa Ines

Tonight, Sunday May 30th, the Mission Capella and instruments will present a Mission Heritage Concert at 7:00 PM at Old Mission Santa Inés in Solvang as part of their bicentennial celebration. Our choirs sang at Mission Santa Inés in January for the feast day of their patroness, St. Agnes, and have been invited back to present music from imperial Spain, colonial Mexico and the California missions, some of which has not been heard in over a century.
The tradition of Mission choirs sharing in celebration at each other’s major milestones dates back to the eighteenth century. When our current church was dedicated in 1820, the choirs of Mission Santa Inés and Mission San Fernando both joined with Santa Barbara’s choir and orchestra in the elaborate musical celebration. We invite you to join us for this festive program.

I MADDONARI FESTIVAL
As you might have noticed, the annual I Madonnari Festival at the Old Mission is this weekend. The directors of the festival made great efforts to ensure that you would be able to attend Mass today with as little disruption as possible and hope that you were able to get here okay. If you plan to stay and enjoy the Festival after Mass, we ask that you park your car on the large field between the main parking lot and Serra Hall. This will help ensure that parking remains open to those coming to later Masses.

RECYCLE SIGHT
Donate used and old eyeglasses to the Lions Sight and Hearing Center. Glasses are cleaned, categorized by prescription, and distributed around the world, where eyeglasses are unaffordable and inaccessible. Call (805) 569-8264 to receive a list of specially marked boxes in selected drop-off sites. (Lions Sight and Hearing Center - Cottage Hospital Eye Center, Junipero at Bath, Santa Barbara)

Editor’s Notes
Since our new parish bulletin was first printed a month ago, many have commented on the red ink of the cover. With this in mind, I wanted to let everyone know a little more about the color of our bulletin covers.
Although some of you may miss the full color cover photo of the Mission, we felt that given the savings a single color cover would give us as we looked to enlarge the bulletin, that the cover you see on the bulletin today was worth the change.
As is the case for most single color bulletin covers, the color on the cover of our parish bulletin will change throughout the year. If you are tired of the red, you will be happy to know that for the next four weeks, the bulletin cover will be blue. If you don’t care for blue, the four weeks after that the cover will be green. Throughout the year the cover color rotation will also include purple and gold.

HOW DOES ONE BECOME CATHOLIC?

Fifth Sunday of Easter
May 9, 2004

The Gospel tells us over and over in ever so many ways that love means self-sacrifice. In order to live out the Gospel, we must emulate the love of Jesus, that is, we must give of ourselves for the sake of others. When we love in this way, we share in Jesus’ mission. Today’s Gospel reminds us to take some time to examine our lives. If we find that we are not as self-sacrificing as we could be—as we are called to be—then we should consider this Gospel as our invitation to love more completely. What is at stake is a share in Christ’s everlasting glory. Glory and love are promised to us, but we share in them only when we take up Jesus’ mission through our own self-sacrificing love. Loving one another is the true mark of the disciples of Jesus. “See how they love one another.”

Moving the Stations of the Cross
On May 16 at 4:00 PM in the parish Social Room, there will be a meeting for all those interested in supporting the moving of the St. Anthony Seminary Mosaic Stations of the Cross before the property is sold. We will be meeting with Fr. Nevin to determine what is possible. So far the cost should remain at $20,000. Some people have graciously offered gifts toward that amount. Help will definitely be needed to prepare a new site (that means digging holes). I am not hoping to begin a capital campaign, but I am hoping to co-ordinate moving the Stations and making them available to all people in Santa Barbara, now and in the future if there is an interest. If you are interested in any way, please join us on the 16th.
Thank you, Fr. Richard

“Whoever loves me will keep my word.”

Reflection for the Liturgy of the Word
Sixth Sunday of Easter
Reading I: Acts 15:1-2, 22-29
Reading II: Revelation 21:10-14, 22-23
Gospel: John 14:23-29

Both the reading from Acts and the Gospel tell us that Luke was interested in showing the abiding presence of the Lord with the early Christian community. Both groups involved in the dispute in acts trusted that the Holy Spirit would guide them to the right decision. In the Gospel, Jesus includes a promise and a challenge in his farewell. He promises to “make his dwelling place” with them always. The condition for him to be present with all his heart, however, is that they continue to love him and to take his message seriously. Jesus says the message is not just his but also that of the Father. He is the messenger of the Father. He promises to send the Spirit who will stand at their side and teach them all things.

Life Focus
Speak of a time when you trusted and experienced true peace. Where do you need peace right now?

Relate a situation when you were guided by an influence greater than yourself.

On what occasion have you come to realize that your “talents” came from beyond yourself?

In what past or present decisions have you needed God’s wisdom and guidance?
